"hole in the ocean" an egg dish

Robert | Jun 25, 2005 01:56 PM

My neighbor/friend gave me a quick breakfast the other day. It was tastey, easy and new to me. It goes like this:

1. Into a slice of bread cut about a 2" piece out.

2. Heat oil in a fry pan and add the bread then the egg in the 'hole'.

3. Cook until the egg sets then flip.

4. Season with salt, pepper and Parmesan cheese. Then cook until the egg is as you like it and serve.

I said "that was great what is it?"

"Something my Mom used to make when I was growing up. I know it as 'a hole in the ocean'."

I did a search on "hole in the ocean" and found it was children games and/or projects. No recipes or references to a foodie thing.

Has anybody heard of this? Where does it come from? My friend grew up Queens across the East River from Manhattan. He came to San Francisco in the middle 60's and consequently has an 'iffy' memory. ;-)

Thanks, Robert

p.s. I really like this home cooking board.
