Hokkaido Seafood--Chinese Buffet in Encino

Chandavkl | Sep 17, 201003:59 PM     10

I know what some of you are thinking. Hokkaido is in Japan and Hokkaido Seafood at 15910 Ventura Blvd. is a Japanese restaurant. But if it walks like a Chinese restaurant and talks like a Chinese restaurant, in my book it is a Chinese restaurant regardless of the moniker. The Japanese food you see here is what you typically see at Chinese buffets--sushi and chicken teriyaki. The rest of the choices are basically the same as what you see at most Chinese buffet restaurants. Furthermore, on a previous scouting trip, Mrs. Chandavkl reported that most of the employees are Chinese. (I'm not sure if she talked to them or what.) As to the food, it IS a buffet restaurant so we're not talking a Chowhound's delight. It's above average buffet food and certainly fills in a need for this part of the Valley, as indicated by the large crowds. I would say it's a good value, particularly the $9.99 weekday lunch. (I believe dinner and weekends is $7 more.) Kind of a strange location on the ground floor of an office building, but there is free validated parking.
