HK-style desserts at Golden Island Cafe, San Mateo

Last night we stopped at Golden Island in San Mateo for some desserts. Black rice with coconut milk ($3.25) can be served hot or cold. It's a huge serving, more than two people could eat, and the hot version had a gooey, chewy texture with lots of barely sweetened coconut cream. I had one of the specials posted on the wall, Sea coconut with snow frog cream (harsmar) with coconut milk, $5.25. Served warm in a blue and white porcelain cocotte, I was shocked at the quantity of harsmar. It was about a cup's worth with just a few pieces of tender sea coconut and some coconut cream to whiten it. Unlike at Hui Lan Shan in Milpitas where I couldn't quite be sure what this stuff tasted like because the serving was so small, I think I "get it" now. Jelly-like in texture and translucent opalish color, it does have a spicy bite to it that reminds me of ginger. As it's supposed to be good for your skin, my complexion will be glowing from this mega-dose.
