Hispaniola and New Leaf?--Upper Manhattan

Loeb | Apr 12, 2002 09:51 AM

Anyone tried the entrees at Hispaniola? Took a friend out for drinks there last night and wine was $8-9/glass. Don't go out drinking much, but that seemed excessive, especially in this neighborhood (181 and Cabrini). The little vegetable empanadas were tasty and filled with onion, two tiny things for $5 which might be considered "reasonable" for tapas. The place itself is lovely (the woman who greeted us was really nice too) but unless the food there is really special we won't go back.

Didn't realize that New Leaf (Ft. Tryon Park, 192nd St.) is backed by Bette Midler, who has been incredible in terms of her efforts on behalf of New York Parks, and that proceeds help benefit Ft. Tryon Park. Some say New Leaf started out pretty well but the service is now terrible and the food is expensive and has gone downhill. If anyone has had a recent positive experience please post! The place is beautiful but doesn't seem to serve the neighborhood. (What we need is an amazing, reasonably-priced cafeteria in that spot.)
