Went to El Barco on Friday for some deep fried whole snapper with white wine, cilantro, and red onion, shrimp ceviche, and fish empanadas. I love this place. So festive. The huge coronas served in an ice bucket also remind me of the Martini served at the intercontinental in the crystal carafe(albeit completely different).
The seafood here is always fresh and there is the usual fiery house salsa. They had a fine chop of tomatillos and jalapeno that tasted like a spring garden on fire. Also they had a jar of roasted/smoked ancho chiles to spread all over the complimentary tostadas.
On saturday, we hit up Borinquen Lounge on Western for some Pork Jibaritos and Banana Dumplings. Get those deep fried plantains about 6 inches from your face and you get hit with a carload of garlic. The cool lettuce and tomato, slathered mayo, garlicky plantains and hot shredded pork are the perfect union.
So much garlic, it's like being in a french bistro on the island of puerto rico.
Now I just need to head down to Maxwell St tomorrow for some Carnitas and end the weekend full as an overstuffed tamale.
