I made it through the punisihing rain to Hiro Sushi on East 10th St tonight. The place is relatively new and the whole staff was brought up from a Miami branch of the same restaurant. Turns out the chef is from Miami by way of Hong Kong. Regardless of where he's from he seemed like a very kind and earnest fellow.
I don't think the fish is top-shelf but it's good enough for making into some tasty Maki like the buttery "I Love Eel" inside out roll, loaded with toasted eel balanced around a cucumber center. I'd say it was the best thing on the menu that we sampled.
A single piece of uni sushi ordered was very good quality as well. This place definitely isn't a prime contender in the sushi wars but is a decent no-wait backup place when an affordable sushi fix is needed in the East Village.
