Read a piece in City Pages on Himalayan's new location/format in Dinkytown. So I decided to check it out with my wife.
They're trying for a Chipotle/Punch order at the counter and get your food fast format. I like both Chipotle and Punch when I'm in a hurry. I love Himalayan.
The Naan is the best I've tasted in the western hemisphere. It was made fresh and had really terrific texture (stretchy). I haven't had the roti.
The Chana Masala didn't look like much (chick peas and taters and spices that make it all kinda brown), but it tasted great. And the various veggies and things that are added to it make for a terrific meal. I went with fresh jalapenos, onions, greens, pickled veggies and sweet tamarind sauce for a nice hot-sweet combo.
The only downer was the deep-fried appetizer. It was pre-made, held and cold and just not very interesting.
They are new. They could use a few tweaks in pursuit of crisper workflow and they need better supervision so the staff keeps the eating area cleaner. If they can alter it just a bit without sacrificing food quality, and add the right expansion planning/marketing, I think they could blow up nationally. Maybe someone else is already in this market and doing just that, but I haven't seen it yet.
The value for money was great. The food seems pretty healthy. I didn't try chicken or lamb, but I'll be going back for sure.
