Himalaya Cafe Opens for B,L,D in Old Saybrook

DonShirer | Jan 17, 201709:51 AM     4

The Himalaya Cafe, featuring "authentic" Indian dishes, has been open for several weeks, but recently expanded their hours (7:30-1:30 most days) to include breakfast and lunch in addition to dinner.

My wife was a little leery to try what she thought might be Mongolian cuisine, so I stopped by at lunchtime and picked up a Lamb Roll for her to try at home. Shanti, the friendly manager, suggested I have it made mild so as not to overwhelm her tastebuds, and it worked. DW liked her half, and hogged all the chutney and sour cream that came with it.

They are located at 1456 Boston Post Rd., next to Shakahari, a vegetarian Indian restaurant I reported on earlier. There are a small number of pleasantly decorated eat-in tables with sturdy furniture that looks like it would support an Indian elephant. No website yet, so I'll mention a few items from their dinner menu as an example of their offerings:

Chicken Tikka and Tikka Masala, Reshmi or Lasuni Kebab, Lamb Chops. Chicken Curry, Vindaloo or Korma. Lamb or Paneer Kati Roll, Tandoori Chicken Wings, Himalaya Mixed Grill (which i want to try next time). There are a few vegetarian entrees like Yellow Tadka Dhaal, Aloo or Paneer Matar, and Dhaal Makhani. (Now I'm going to have to look up what all these mean!)
