Hill Country BBQ -- Peninsula

The Dickey's discussion reminded me to post this...

I was kind of dubious about any food truck that wanted to claim the Hill Country label, but these guys are pretty good. I'm not going to tell you that they're on par with Franklin's or John Mueller's in Austin, but I will say that John could bring his barbecue to Texas and not get laughed out of the state.

His brisket is quality. Ask for the moist; it's chopped rather than sliced but he works hard to get the fat appropriately rendered and his rub is solid. The pulled pork is also pretty good; he does a South Carolina style mustard vinegar sauce which lives up to my expectations. I am not a ribs guy but my friends tell me the ribs work out just fine, and the chicken is nice and moist and flavorful.

I've talked with John a fair bit and he's got a serious commitment to getting his food and flavor profiles right. As always you can tell a lot about a barbecue place from the sides.

IMHO, a notch up from Gorilla and certainly better than Memphis Minnie's. I can't speak to how he compares to the best of the East Bay cause I haven't gone deep on that side of the bay yet.

He's been rolling with Movable Feast in San Jose lately. Facebook page:
