High Tea at the Graciela - BEWARE

The new boutique hotel in Burbank, on Pass near Warner Studios, advertised a daily high tea. Sounded like a great idea, so I gathered up my daughter and two-year old granddaugher for some girly fun. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! The hotel is beautiful, but really the tea was a figment of their imagination. For $18 EACH, what we each got was 4 of the teeniest tiniest little tea sandwiches. Canape's really, open-faced little smidgens with a teeny bit of stuff on each (I think there was one with some smoked salmon, one with turkey, and two with cucumbers- I say "think" because the stuff was sliced so thinly that really you could only make a guess by the color, not by taste). They measured maybe 1" across and they could not have used more than one slice of very thinly sliced white bread for the entire course. Then the second course was the scones...2 teeny scones, each about the size of a quarter. What was hysterical was that they also set out bowls of lemon curd, devonshire cream and whipped cream. BOWLS of the stuff--I'm not sure what they expected we would put the stuff on. Then the desert course came. Two 1" fruit tarts (about 1/2 strawberry used for the two), and a tiny cube of lemon bar.

OK, the tea itself was great. I had the jasmine tea, it was delicious. And the place settings were gorgeous...china, silver, silky tea cozies on the individual full pots of tea. And my granddaughter loved the little baby food, it was just her size!

Too bad, it was such a great idea. But I think the days are numbered for high tea at the Graciela.
