Okay... i'll admit it shocked me to see a Hibachi place in Mesquite, Texas after being gone a few years. But there are now two within 1/2 mile of each other near Town East Mall. Where once stood Smokey Bones Barbeque now stands Iron Chefs. The address is 3811 Pavillion Court which is the small street the runs down the restaurant row on the Town East Side of Interstate 635.
If you went here when it was Smokey Bones, you will recognize little has changed about the outside. When you walk inside, you will notice somethin different! Besides the Sushi Chefs screaming irasshaimase!!((welcome I was told)), the restaurant has been divided in half--one side for sushi and ordering grilled items from the menu and the hibachi side.
I'm not one for sushi so we headed to one of the 12 hibachi grills in the back. I wil digress here momentarily and say that they do try to put too many chairs around the table and it can get somewhat crowded. So they have now seated you and give you a menu... WOW... there are probably 25 different items to chose from in the Hibachi side. This is the standard options though... soup, salad, rice, meats and veggies. The waitress takes you drink orders. They do have a good selection of beers and sake. When she returns with your drink orders, she takes you dinner orders. Sometimes there is a few minutes of wait time while they see if they can get some more folks for your table..(hint-go with friends or family.. it is MUCH more fun and relaxed..). If you are seated with strangers, strike up a conversation with them. If you are all talking, it makes the meal much more fun.
I wanted to try it all so I ordered the three meat option.. opting for Chicken, Steak and Shrimp figuring that covered the most common orders. I also chose fried rice. The first portion to arrive was the soup and salad. The soup is a clear chicken broth style soup with mushrooms in it. It was warm and delicious. The Salad was the standard Japanese salad I have received at Hibachi restaurants before. This time, I changed the ginger dressing and was pleasantly suprized!. It was crisp and delicious. The Chef then came out and, after double checking our orders, was ready to go.
The show was a little canned but the chef was interesting, funny and entertaining but we are here to read about food. The steak was requested medium and it might have been JUST a tad beyond medium but it was DELICIOUS and tender... it was strip steak. The shrimp was wonderful and firm with a wonderful seasoning. The chicken was my favorite. It was juicy and seasoned wonderfully! The fried rice with my meal was perfectly cooked and seasoned as well. The veggies were delicious and had very thin sliced potatoes I am told. It was a wonderful mix of broccoli, mushrooms, potatoes, onions, and zucchini.
Since going the first time, we have been back three times... each time the food is ever so slightly different but still wonderful. The place is getting more more crowded each time. In my opinion, it is one of the better Hibachi places and certainly convenient in the Eastern Dallas County area.
A good friend of mine wrote today to tell me that she had the sushi. It was fresh and delicious. She strongly suggested the Heart Attach Roll as everyone at their table raved about it!!!
