Hey Balti - how do you make your Southsider?

With Preakness around the corner I've been looking into making Southsiders to celebrate the day (assuming the ponies aren't running to an empty infield and grandstand). I never had a taste for Black-Eyed Susans and usually default to a very un-Marylandy mint julep.

I've seen a lot of recipes online with a even more variation. It seems the key to getting the drink right is proportion of lime to lemon (and sometimes orange?) in the sour mix. I also would prefer a shaken drink to using a blender (as I don't have one). Any thoughts on the light rum and dark rum or could I really just use one. Am I going to have to use food coloring or god forbid Midori to get the color right?

Any old pros out there who can steer me on the right course? What's your secret?
