not that this is new news to these boards, but finally made it to hemsin and definitely one of the best meals i've eaten in my hood!
someone posted earlier that the appetizer sampler was a rip off, but i thought it was well-priced and delicious. the kofte, babaganoush and stuffed grape leaves were perfect (though i did want more than 2 grape leaves, there is a reason they call it a sampler). the cacik and hummus were both good, but not remarkable. falafel app. was terrific. loved the sesame seeds on the outside.
i haven't seen too many mentions of the bread, but it is really out of this world! does anyone know what it's called? tastes like a bagel and the pocketless pitas i buy at massis, the european grocer on 43rd ave.
entrees were all good, though i thought my mixed grill was the best choice. the baby lamb chop was better than any i have had in astoria (and i've had many!). it was definitely the highlight of my entree.
desserts were equally impressive. we just asked for a variety and enjoyed them all. the only thing we ordered that wasn't good was the rice pudding. rubbery texture on top and flavorless inside. but it wasn't enough to make me not want to return in the very near future.
planning on going back for the stuffed turkish pizzas and maybe brunch as well.
