Thinking about taking the family to a pre-graduation dinner at the Helmand in May. Ten people, some of whom aren't especially adventurous and/or don't eat lamb. I've never been there myself, but from reading the descriptions on this board it sounds like it would be a perfect combination of good food and drink, ambience, service, and that elusive dash of something extra. But is there something there for everyone, or only chowhounds?
Meanwhile, my skeptical father (who's had Afghan food in Claremont, CA before and wasn't too impressed) pushes Slanted Door.
Other suggestions I've received include the Claremont Hotel and Trader Vic's, neither of which are known for their food, from what I can tell.
Appreciate any comments and alternatives!
