Heirloom (or at least decent) tomatoes?

I enjoyed a couple of BLT's I made myself last night. They were good, but every time I eat one of those tennis balls they call tomatoes in the supermarket, I wonder how much more delicious that dish would be if I had been able to use a REAL tomato. I'd like to know where here in the Los Angeles area I can get really good tomatoes. And what are your secrets to best ripen store-bought toms?
