Heartland (St. Paul, MN, split from February 2008 "mid-month dining out highlights MSP" thread)

This is probably as good of a thread as any to add my review.

I went to Heartland last night with my sister (for her birthday) and my parents. We got the fingerling potatoes with scallion butter and smoked pork croquettes as starters. Both were excellent.

From there, we all split up.

I got the 3 course tasting: Seared fois gras with strawberries and a grilled croustade to start. This was my first time having fois gras and I was really looking forward to it. Maybe I'm missing something, but it tasted like...nothing. Is that normal? Beyond that, half the croustade was burnt to the point of being inedible. Oh well, that was the only real hiccup in the night. Main was pork loin with spring greens, baby fennel and leak cream. That was very good.

The other mains ordered were: whitefish (Dad), wild boar chop (mom) and duck breast (sister). Everyone was delighted with their choices, which is impressive considering my Dad almost never compliments restaurant food. We all shared bits, and I must say, the boar was incredible. It was first experience with that as well.

My dessert was white chocolate pot de creme with maple syrup glazed pecans and coriander cornmeal cookies (it was outstanding). My sister got the chocolate mousse charlotte, which had quite a potent alcohol taste. It wasn't a big hit with us.

Overall, loved the experience. I like the vibe of that little place, the kitchen being right in the dining room, etc. I will definitely be going back.
