This weekend, my wife and I are taking her parents up to the Healdsburg area for the quintessential wine country experience that they've never had (!). I've got a few ideas in mind, but I'd appreciate other suggestions for nearby wineries and restaurants.
We're staying in a vineyard cottage off of Chalk Hill Road in the Alexander Valley. I've looked at a map of nearby wineries but didn't recognize many names. I'm primarily interested in Zinfindel, Italian varietals, Syrah, and other Rhone varietals. I'd also like to stick with the small-shop wineries with little distribution. Any good winery that you've visited or tasted from that fits this description?
Also, I think we are only doing one restaurant dinner. I've eaten at Ravenous and Manzanita before and liked them both. At this point, I'm thinking Ravenous, but they are also huge Italian food lovers. Should I take them to Santi? Her dad can't do red meat...should I take them to Willis? Her mom loves a good martini.
(P.S. I was just in town recently scoping places out and had a *great* lunch at the Jimtown store. Hobbs proscuitto sandwich with figs and Point Reyes blue cheese, fresh lemondade, and the most delicious olallieberry pie ever. Weird taste combos, I know, but it was great).
