Zipping to and from the Day’s Inn in Antioch, I passed by the intersection that is home to the neon-lit “EAT” sign at Hazel’s Drive In several times. Before leaving town, I dropped in to check it out.

The exterior is a classic drive-in with plenty of glass and neon surrounded by a parking lot. Inside’s a counter with stools and a very friendly lady who welcomed me. I asked what Hazel’s is known for and she said milkshakes and huge burgers. The milkshakes are made with real ice cream and come in every flavor imaginable. I asked what the most popular flavor might be. Peanut butter was her answer, but she added that she liked the Almond Roca herself.
I ordered one for the road. Flecked with chocolate-coated toffee and a base of almond extract and vanilla ice cream, this was indeed a dead ringer for Almond Roca in thick, rich liquid dairy form. If anyone’s tried Hazel’s, please chime in.
