Hayes and Kebob now open--quick report

Pistou | Jan 5, 2007 08:12 PM

I've been watching this place go in to the space where Sage used to be on Hayes at Gough (next to the former Pendragon bakery), and it opened sometime in the last week or so. Short version: potentially a good inexpensive addition to the neighborhood, with some wrinkles to be ironed out.

The biggest wrinkle was the 15 minute wait for 2 wrap sandwiches to go. There are lots of tables but no obvious place to wait for to-go orders. We ended up standing by the cash register watching the manager move food to tables and to-go customers in super slow, unphased motion as orders and customers stacked up on either side of him. As my friend commented, "Right here--this is the scene they'd show in Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares."

I had a veggie wrap. The bread was fresh and good, as were the veggies which consisted of grilled zucchini, mushrooms and eggplant. They were unseasoned, but tasty enough. Tomatoes, raw onion and shredded lettuce were also in there. Tomatoes in January, why bother? A light dressing was nice, but some tahini or other sauce would have been welcome.

The last comment goes for my friend's falafel as well, which she declared to be a little bland but basically good. Would've been better with sauce.

The music was screechy torture to our Western ears (and there's plenty of Middle Eastern music we both like) so I'm not tempted to sit and eat. But I'll certainly give the food a second chance after they've had a couple of weeks to settle in.
