On Monday I arrived in time to catch the second half of happy hour (Monday-Friday 2:30pm to 6pm) at Hawks Public House in East Sacramento.
With laptop in tow, I took advantage of the guest wifi to answer some emails from my bar perch while enjoying a cool one and waiting for my friend to arrive.
Johnny Good Feather, $7 - Iced tea with lemon juice spiked with housemade limoncello was so refreshing and delicious.
Fried boquerones, $6 - Marinated white anchovies with the faintest dusting and deep-fried were so fragile, crumbling on the slightest touch. Very bright and lemony aioli made for a double dose of zesty acidity.
Ciccioli, $6 - A slice of Italian style pork rillettes pressed into a loaf was leaner than I like but most would probably prefer this. Presented beautifully with colorful pickled veggies, grilled bread and Dijon mustard on a wooden slab, this bar snack is the best investment of six bucks that I can imagine.
Point Reyes Toma cheese, $8 - Served with black pepper and lavender honey, the crackers were special too.
Housemade potato chips, $4 - Not particularly flavorful chips, but the caramelized onion dip was good even if it was too heavy for these chips.
I liked the dip even better spread on the extra bread. One can double-down on butterfat by adding some of the soft whipped butter.
For our second round, we had virgin Goshawks, $6, made with lime juice, housemade ginger ale and cucumber. Another very refreshing drink on a warm afternoon.
Both of us enjoyed our snacks and libations very much and would consider returning for a meal. I'd love to hear some other opinions.
