new Hawaiian restaurant in OC - Maui Hawaiian BBQ in Fountain Valley

Aloha Chowhounds,

Not to be confused with Maui Island BBQ in Tustin, which I wrote about a week or two ago, I stumbled across this new Hawaiian restaurant while looking to try out Manila Sunset in Fountain Valley. Manila Sunset is closed on Mondays, which I didn't know, so I turned my head to see a new Hawaiian restaurant as part of the same strip mall where the Costco store in Fountain Valley is located.

Maui Hawaiian BBQ is a lot like your typical L&L Hawaiian eatery. Same type of setup, where the food is ordered at the counter, and then they call your order number to pick it up. I ordered my regular dish whenever trying any new Hawaiian places, the BBQ combo, which was Hawaiian BBQ chicken, BBQ beef, and Kalbi short ribs, along with the customary scoops of rice, macaroni salad, and bed of cabbage leaves. This combo was $6.69.

Quality was pretty good, on par with L&L Hawaiian, the portions might have been even slightly bigger, as I ran out of rice as I was finishing the last of the meats. Chicken thighs seemed bigger than L&L, along with very generous and juicy BBQ beef portions, but the short ribs were slightly less tasty than what I normally expect.

This place seems new because it had a grand opening sign, and they were offering free soda drinks with any purchase. It was the first time in awhile since I had been in this strip mall, so I don't know what was there before.

Recommended for those who like L&L-type of Hawaiian food. I'll definitely be going back whenever I visit the Fry's Electronics store nearby.
