Each summer, my boyfriend and I throw a homongous theme party in our Brooklyn apartment and tiny backyard. Each year, we pick a theme in bad taste, then devote ourselves to surprising guests with the best quality food and most lavish spectacle. The event has become inter-active and somewhat famous amongst our circle of friends; artists, beatniks, punk rockers and drag queens.
The theme this year: LORD OF THE FLIES
Yep, it's in bad taste, but it allows costumery, political commentary during wartime, britpop and punk rock, foolishness, horror, bodypaints, sunbathing and a whole roast pig.
But I want to add the most elaborate menu possible, so I'm exploring beach- and island-themed menus around the globe. In addition to the whole roast pig, I hope to serve conch in various forms... plus seviche, lots of fresh fruit and shellfish.
CAN YOU HELP ME??? I need to learn about family-style dining in Hawaii. What is the most popular base starch, for example? In my native New England, the base starch is the potato. The folks in my current Spanish neighborhood seem to favor tortillas and plantain. Recommend any fun, simple homestyle treats you know from beachside dinners, please please please.
If you can offer me a great educational website re. Hawaiian or S. Pacific cooking, I'd be MOST grateful!!
