I hate to share my favorite sushi secret but...

the sushi chef told me that business is slow, and I want them to stay in business!!

It's called Mon Sushi and Grill and it's on Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks. Pretty much right across the street from the La Reina complex by Van Nuys. (It is not Mon, which is on Ventura in Tarzana.)

My husband and I always sit at the sushi bar (never a wait) and have Charlie as our chef. He always makes such beautiful presentations, the fish is always so fresh, the cuts are generous and he also gives us little things to try for free. Recently I have had ankimo (sp? - monkfish liver) and the sweet shrimp which was very fresh...as in alive. He also does wonderful things with fresh live scallops. The yellowtail is always delicious, and the handrolls are big and tasty. All of the special rolls we have tried are wonderful too.

The restaurant also has lots of other Asian dishes for those who might go with friends who don't like sushi. They have a little bit of everything...Chinese, Thai, etc.

We went Tuesday night and had yellowtail sashimi, the monk-fish liver sashimi, 2 spicy tuna handrolls, 2 spicy scallop handrolls, a beer, a saki and a special roll that Charlie made for us with asparagus, lettuce and crab. The bill was $39 which I find very reasonable. And they're open sort of late for a sushi bar which is helpful since I'm always working late.
