The Fresh Pond Whole Foods had Hatch chiles yesterday for those who are interested.
I got a few pounds at Whole Foods here in Seattle and made an enormous salsa verde with pork (I also threw in some chipotles). It was great, but I didn't detect any great benefit coming from the Hatch chilies.
Wegman's in Burlington was focusing on Hatch chiles today. The heat levels were medium, hot and extra hot. Unfortunately not all of the displays were labeled so I think I grabbed a few pounds of medium and would have preferred hot. Anyway, it was exciting to see that they had roasted and skinned chiles in the refrigerator case and they were clearly labeled. They weren't seeded or stemmed. It made for a relatively tasty and easy Hatch mac and cheese. It would be easy to stash a few of the roasted in the freezer for future use. The fresh chiles were $1.99/lb and the roasted were $4.99/lb.
Did they say they were actually grown in New Mexico, let alone the Hatch Valley?
Yes, New Mexican Hatch chiles. I'm not sure if it was the actual Hatch Valley, though.
Did they actually say "Grown in New Mexico"? There a lot of fake ones on the market that say "New Mexico Chilies" or "Hatch Chilies" that are grown as far away as China. Although I expect Wegmans wouldn't be confused about the difference.
I don't remember the exact wording, but I felt pretty comfortable buying them as authentic Hatch chiles. I certainly could have been fooled.
Here's the blurb from the Wegman's site:

Yes, they're from Melissa's and are legit Hatch chiles. They set up roasting drums outside in the parking lot. Wegmans runs these Hatch chile events at different locations over the course of 4 weekends from mid-August into September:

We bought 10 pounds a couple of years back, and are planning a visit to the Chestnut Hill Wegmans this weekend to stock up again.
Has anyone seen them at any other Wegman's? I'm going tomorrow to the Chestnut Hill store for some other stuff, and I'd love to get some.
