Harris-Teeter pulling out of several markets

Guru | Jun 27, 2001 10:00 PM

Those of you in the know are familiar with Harris-Teeter, the Southeast's premier gourmet grocer.

Today, they announced the closure of many of their stores in "under-preforming" markets. These markets include: Atlanta, Athens, Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach, Columbia & St. Simon's Island.

The stores in these cities will be sold to Kroger, Piggly Wiggly, or Bi-Lo, depending on the location.

No doubt, they've succumbed to the pressure of other grocers, especially Publix. Publix is currently steamrolling through the South. Their next market entry will be Birmingham, home of Bruno's supermarkets.
