Harris Crab House

Phoebe | Jun 16, 2003 05:08 PM

Spent yesterday afternoon at Harris Crab House and had a lovely time. Arriving about 4pm - there was an hour and half wait. No biggie - it was, afterall, Father's Day and a lovely Sunday afternoon. We strolled next door to Red Eye's Dock bar and enjoyed a couple of canned beers and people watched. 45 minutes later, we meandered back to Harris's and noticed the previously closed-to-the-public outside deck was back open (they were closed for a private party). We took our name off the waiting list and grabbed a seat outside (which we originally wanted anyway). Outside, they offer a limited menu of large crabs, cherrystones, shrimp, soup and salad, oyters and various children's offerings (hot dog and grilled cheese, I believe). We ordered a dozen large, a dozen steamers and two ears of corn. The steamers were sweet and fresh. Melted in our mouths! The crabs were lovely. Having been to Cantler's on several occassions, I immediately noticed that Harris does not put an enormous amount of Old Bay on their crabs. They do, however, have extra Old Bay for those who require it. I prefer the taste of crabs to the taste of Old Bay, so I really liked the Harris way. The only complaints I have are that the outdoor seating is first come-first serve (no hostess to seat you). We had no trouble with it - however, two groups did and almost came to blows over it. What a shame. Also - at 6:30pm - the enitre place was out of crabs. The enitre place. Good thing we got there early :) Feeling sorry for those who had waited hours for a seat, we ordered our homemade Nutty Buddies, paid the very reasonable bill and strolled back to our car, dreaming of purchasing the biggest boat in the marina.
