Harmony Farms for free range and game (short review)

Rebecka | Jan 7, 2004 09:21 PM

Harmony Farms is a game and meat market on La Crescenta Ave in La Crescenta. They have the regular meats, free range, and all kinds of game: duck, goose, venison, elk, rabbit, etc. Since discovering it, I've bought three rabbits and free range chicken there and all have been very good. Their prices are also very fair: rabbit was $4.99 a pound. I've read some dissatisfied things about meat on this board, so I thought I would share my positive experience.

All three rabbits I marinated in red wine and braised the next day in either the marinade, or in one case white wine (contrary to what I thought, this turned out great.) The rabbits were tender and gamey, no "tastes like chicken" and even my guests who couldn't imagine eating rabbits because they were so cute ate a ton. A Frenchman praised the rabbit as well.

I bought free range chicken backs there which I used to make the best chicken broth I have made. All in all, a great store, and open pretty late too, for a small shop (7:30 I think, every day). My only disappointment is that they have no rooster, with which to make coq au vin.
