When I was growing up in NJ there were these great "hard rolls" that my Dad, and I, loved. They were sandwich sized with a star cut on top, a hard crust, and poppyseeds. They were just great sandwich/hamburger rolls. Then we moved to DC and ever since I've never again seen this sort of hard roll, just soft/mushy and shiny/sweet rolls that are lousy for sandwiches. I'm wondering if anyone has seen something like these "hard rolls" around Boston, or elsewhere, over the past few decades. They were sort of like the kummelweck rolls used for "beef on weck" in the Buffalo area. Thanks.
