Hard Boiled Eggs

BASIC cooking question here - yes, I may be a kitchen moron, but here I go: when I hard boil eggs, they nearly always crack during the boiling process, no matter how careful I am to place them in the pot. I though I was overboiling them, but when I opened one, the yolk was still quite runny, clearly not yet hardboiled. When they crack, the white starts to ooze out, making a messy pot. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
