Just about a year ago I stopped by Central Market to call in a favor Chef Tony promised me. And stayed for happy hour (daily 5pm to 6pm) with a glass of Raventos I Blanc Rosé Cava brut, $16.

Chef suggested a plate of wood-fired vegetables, $13.50. Thoroughly roasted to bring out their natural sweetness, the colorful carrots, peppers, sugar peas, cauliflower, beets and more were on a bed of lemony tahini dressing with a drizzle of honey. Loved the combo and will attempt this at home. Then he offered a slice of Pizza Rosso with housecured pepperoni to the patrons sitting at the bar. Nice lagniappe.

Expertly shucked and refreshing, the happy hour oysters at $1.50 were a great deal. Glad I'd had a sample of the pizza to know that the dark blonde firm crust was a style that would reheat well later. I ordered a Pizza Bianca with wild mushrooms and housemade Italian sausage, $17.50 to take home.

Dessert was offered, but no room. I left Central Market satisfied and also pleased to have finally tried what has become a local institution.
