My drive home from Palms Springs took a break at Artisan Restaurant in Paso Robles for happy hour on April 2. The afternoon menu http://artisanpasorobles.com/wp-conte... is served in the bar area on weekdays 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm and weekends 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. I appreciated getting a deal on a busy Sunday.
The Sustainable Fish Taco, $6, featured halibut as the fish of the day. What might look like a lot of batter turned out to be very airy, light and tempura-like crispness encasing the juicy filet of fish. Not shy of heat, this was punched up with slivers of jalapeño, drizzles of hot sauce, chimichurri, crema, red cabbage and salsa fresca for a bold statement. The handmade corn tortilla was too stiff but tasted good.
Chicken wings, $7, seasoned yuzu kosho, cider vinegar and togarashi were a disappointment. Scrawny, tough meat, and too sour even for an acid head like me.
Beer and wine on tap are $5 during happy hour. The Silverhorse Albariño was very nice. Lush mouthfeel and full-bodied yet enough bright acidity to make it refreshing and a good partner with the fish taco. I was sorry that I could not polish off the full glass.
A happy hour stop here was just the right amount of food for a light dinner and a welcome walk around the square before the final leg towards home. This was my first time to Artisan and it's easy to see why it has been so popular over the years.
