Happy Girl Kitchen's pickles and preserves were a fixture at the Ferry Building's farmers market in San Francisco over a run of 10+ years that wrapped up in December. I made the pilgrimage to its store and cafe in Pacific Grove on the Monterey Peninsula last Sunday during a break in the storms.
The walls are hung with San Francisco media tributes. Colorful jars of preserves on display create a kaleidoscope on sunny days.
The cafe offers breakfast and lunch with counter service.
Four Barrel supplies the coffee. The espresso of the day was Friendo Blendo.
My cappuccino, $3.50, was made with care. But I found the roast a bit simple
My brunch choice was the hot entree, bowl of the day. Well, half-bowl, $4, vs. $7 for a whole. I'm glad I opted for the smaller portion as it was generous and filling. The well-seasoned quinoa was punctuated with firm ceci, pepitas and celery leaves, then topped with velvety caramelized roast winter squash and chili-cumin-coriander yogurt sauce. My hippy quinoa breakfast bowl, consumed at the communal table, turned out to be far tastier than expected.
Happy Girl Kitchen made me a happy customer.
