New Happy Family report

Just Larry | Dec 29, 200209:17 AM

We had lunch at New Happy Family, in a mini mall on Valley Blvd. in Rosemead. Everything on the menu is vegetarian but looks for all the world like meat. I started with a Mayonaise Handroll. It is not too exciting but was a fun way to start the meal. It had fresh shredded cabbage and other veggies mixed with fried crunchy bits of veggie wrapped in the green Nori, nice way to start. We ordered a Tofu and Spinach soup to start and Fried Bread (everybody in the place had ordered it so I had to try it). I am not a big fan of Tofu but this soup was great. The broth was amazingly good, hard to believe it is all veggie. We also ordered the Salt and Pepper Fried Oyster Mushrooms. A mountain of the best mushrooms you have ever tasted. I liked this dish even better than the Salt and Pepper Lobster last Tuesday. We also ordered Tofu Skin with Spinach. They were little Tofu pouches filled will small diced veggies. Veggies still had some crunch and sauce had lots of flavor. Spinach was just wilted and perfect. Portions are large and can be split even 6 ways. I will be back soon to try more items from the menu. Next time I want to try a faux meat dish. They look as if they can really fool you. They even offer faux Shrimp and Abalone. Staff and most all the customers are Asian and they were quite helpful. The area has many Vietmanese restaurants too. It looks like a very houndly destination.
