On our quest for good Chinese in San Mateo we tried Happy Cafe tonight (on "B" Street between Second and Third Avenues), which had been recommended by some Chowhounds and also had a good capsule review in the latest San Francisco magazine. We really enjoyed it and will put it right next to Little Sichuan (Fourth Avenue and Ellsworth) for our favorite San Mateo Chinese restaurants.
We had boiled chicken with house dressing (a cold dish in a vinegary-soy sauce); squid and onion in spicy sauce; boiled shrimp dumplings; and Pork Noodles with Mustard Greens (in soup). The noodles were great -- flat and fettucine-looking. The dumplings reminded us of those we like at Little Beijing in SF (Noriega & 20th Avenue). As a free appetizer, they gave us a small portion of cold tofu. Japanese have this dish as well (called hiya-yakko), but this tasted different. The tofu was, I believe, a "silken" type and the sauce seemed to have sesame oil in it. Delicious!
