Happy Autumn - It’s pumpkin & apple pie time – FatApples.

rworange | Sep 22, 200512:10 AM

So, going stir-crazy with a cold, I crawl out of bed tonight to get a piece of pie. First stop was Lola’s – sold out. However, they start taking orders around mid-October for holiday pies like pumpkin, apple and pecan.

FatApples (Berkeley & El Cerrito) now has apple, pumpkin, pecan pies and pumpkin-ginger bread … and even having had a taste, I can’t tell you how they really taste … the cold has abducted my taste buds.

The pumpkin pie did the most valiant fight to assert flavor. It has a wonderful, smooth creamy pudding-like texture and I could detect the pumpkin pie spice.

As much as I could determine, the apple is tart and not sweet with firm apples and I think I detected some butter in the crust. The pumpkin-ginger bread has lots of nuts, my lips are tingling with ginger … but can’t taste it.

They also have end of summer tarts and crumbles. There is a lovely looking tart plum kutchen currently available with large pieces of purple plums.

Anyway, even lacking real taste buds, some of these were pleasant. Roberto said he enjoyed them all. He finished off the pumpkin-ginger bread and packed up the apple pie to take to work tomorrow. I am hording the rest of the piece of pumpkin pie until I can taste again. It’s cold comfort.
