What is happening with the size of boxed pasta?

Dry pasta seems to have downsized from a standard one pound package size to the now more prevalent size of 12 oz. This seems to apply for the common brands at least -- Ronzoni, Barilla, San Giorgio, plus the supermarket house brands.
What is going on?
We lived in the UK for two years and only recently returned, so if there was any local discussion here on this, we missed it.

The "old" one pound size

last package I have left in that size!

The newer boxes

The box might be the same size but t typically holds 12 oz not 16 oz....
