Honoring the original Hangtown spirit of Placerville, Hangman's Tree houses an ice cream saloon and a loving restoration of the historic building.
After a day of wine judging, the inside of my mouth was raw, scarred by the tannin, alcohol and acidity of young wines. I sought out a black and tan sundae to soothe and heal. But alas, the hot fudge sauce was already sold out for the day. Next best thing, a hot caramel sundae made with a scoop each of chocolate and vanilla ice cream (Cascade Glacier from Oregon), $4.50. Nothing particularly notable about the sundae, mostly I enjoyed breathing in the atmosphere at this historic saloon and eyeing the artifacts from my bar stool. Any place that displays a dummy hanging on a noose deserves some attention.
