Hangar Steak that Haunts my Dreams....

During a quick visit to Sonoma a week ago, I missed my plane. That little mistake has become the object of my culinary dreams lately when I stumbled into Monti's Grill in Santa Rosa for some din din. I sat at the bar and ordered the Hangar Steak with Shallot Parsley Butter and Truffled Pommes Frite. Had two local reds, one a Lange and Reed Cab Franc 07 that was oustanding and even more outstanding was a first vinatge Napa cab called Ehrets "The Beginning." The steak was sliced and succelent, topped a shallot rich sauce that the menu forgot to mention was filled with heavenly Stilton cheese. The pommes frite, fried to perfection were dusted with a bit of parmesan and scented with truffle oil. Dear God......that meal...and the pairing was incredible. Who knew? Santa Rosa. The wines, btw, were so excellent, that I ordered a case of the Ehrets 05...each bottle only $35. My waiter told me that this was a first vintage for these folks and holy moly are they on to something. I swear I thought I was drinking a Hundred Acre...yes, that good. Happily I think the entree was under $25. Still dreaming of this steak, I ordered something similar back at home in Malibu at the recently opened Charlies. A bit different, a T Bone with a Stilton/ Walnut sauce. The sauce was so disappointing, all I could talk about was that darned dish at Monti's over dinner. The $46 price tag of the Charlies steak made it all the harder to digest....... Anyway, next time you're rolling through Sonoma --- forget Healdsburg, turn up the 7 to Santa Rosa and check out this place.
