Coffee & Tea 5

hand-brewed coffee

In an area replete with good coffee, with cafes on seemingly every corner, where we are embarrassingly spoiled in the abundance of our caffeination options, there is a place that is almost unique in its offerings. There is a place where you choose your coffee beans like you would choose a bottle of wine, from a menu, and they are ground and brewed in front of you.

Royal Coffee, at 63rd St and College Ave.

They also offer pastries, poached eggs and toast, and two sandwiches. Full of Berkeley types, bicyclists, and bikers. Also many dogs and small children. Books and newspapers. A quiet leafy street.

Make no mistake, the standout is the coffee. You can try them alphabetically, plus monthly specials. This month is New Guinea. My favorites: Mexican or Sumatra, in honor of my grandfather, who travelled there many times. Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum.
