We grabbed a quick bite at The Hambak after shopping at HMart in San Jose. https://www.chowhound.com/post/hmart-...
Unlike the other two food stalls in the food court that are branches of other local restaurants, The Hambak is the first and only location of this restaurant. it specializes in, no surprise, hambak (the Korean version of hamburger steak) aka hamburgu in Japanese.
Most of the menu items were not available. We wound up ordering the hambak with lotus root chips, $12.95. This came with rice and two "sides". Kind of a joke to call the sad, tiny, wilted lettuce a salad. The stir-fried bean sprouts were okay. The hamburger steak itself seemed precooked and reheated, as it was lacking in moisture. The gravy studded with carrots and onions was okay, though leaning more to a tart finish than other versions I've tried. Best part were the very thin and crisp lotus root chips. These were brought out to our table after we'd picked up our order and obviously freshly fried and finished with some salt and fresh herbs.
The hamburger steak is not something I'd seek out again due to the price and quality, but it was convenient at that moment. Maybe other dishes are better. Anyone else tried The Hambak?
For a better hamburger steak, check out Usagi in San Mateo.
