Haleh Pastry & Cafe | Sunnyvale

Melanie Wong | Jan 6, 2017 09:15 PM

The Sunnyvale branch of Haleh Pastry, a Persian-style bakery opened a few months ago. Besides the pastries, this spot offers up Verve coffee drinks and Treat ice cream along with wifi.

A variety of Persian cookies are sold by the pound. Most interesting is a date-filled maamoul made with no added sugar and an abundance of cardamon. Fresh dates are used for the filling, offering a softer and less grainy texture. Honey-glazed toasted pistachios garnish the top.

We like the bamieh glazed with honey-rosewater, but the zoolbia were too anemic and tasted undercooked. A gluten-free walnut cookie has the satisfying chew of amaretti with more nuttiness and a carob-like aftertaste. Coconut cookies are light as air, sort of a cross between meringue and coconut macaroons. Other than the bamieh and zoolbia, these are only lightly sweet.

What else should we try?
