Today I've been binge-watching Anthony Bourdain's "Parts Unknown", including the Singapore episode. Thought I'd post about Wednesday's lunch Hainan Chicken Rice at Cluck2Go in Pasadena while it's fresh on my mind. It opened seven months ago. An off-shoot of Man Chan in Rowland Heights, the owners re-engineered the Hainan chicken prep before expanding. https://www.chowhound.com/post/hainan...
My friend and I ordered . . .
Spicy cucumbers, $4.95
Half Hainan chicken, dark meat only, $14.95
Salt and pepper chicken wings, $7.99
Winter melon tea (cold), $2.50
All good! The locally-sourced chicken's presented off the bone, poached gently with subtle seasoning of lemongrass and ginger, to taste so fresh. Toothsome flesh, firm skin, and so good with the red chile and the green onion-ginger condiment pastes. No sweet soy sauce was provided, only the low sodium soy sauce on the table. The chicken soup's light and greaseless, and the rice was fully flavored and not slick with chicken fat. I like to see some fat on both, but I was delighted to find this level of quality here even if not my preferred style. I liked the crunch and tart-sweet balance of the pickled veggies served on the side.
The salt and pepper wings impressed me too. Very juicy and succulent flesh, these wings were perfectly seasoned with delicately crisp batter.
The one thing I did not like at Cluck2Go is that everything was served on disposables. Service was very friendly and helpful. For less than $40 including tax and tip, this was enough food to feed three people.
Anyone else tried it?
