Haida Sandwich & Juice | Mission Viejo - Orange County

Melanie Wong | Aug 8, 2017 02:49 PM

Yesterday I was headed to Mission Ranch, the Persian market in Mission Viejo, and spotted Haida in the same shopping mall. I recognized the name from its other outlets. While I'd heard about Persian-style sandwiches that are available in Southern California, this was my first opportunity to actually try one.

Apparently this location opened in March. The inside is fitted with red leatherette booths, and there are a few tables outside as well. I had a hard time deciding among the tongue, hot dog or Haida special.

Ultimately I ordered the Haida special (hot), meaning heated. I had blinked at the $10.99 price, but when this big sandwich weighing in at twice the size of a usual sub came out, I understood the value equation. It's enough to feed two people. The Haida Special (hot) featured Persian mortadella, pork ham, jambon, melted cheese, mushrooms, pickle, lettuce, tomato, and the piece de resistance . . . crispy shoestring potatoes. The cold cuts were sliced to order and everything tasted so fresh. The bread's very light with a thin, crisp crust and nicely toasted on the cut edge. And slathered with a lot of mayonnaise. I liked this alot.

To drink, I tried the fresh watermelon juice, $4.99. Again, that seemed pricey to me, but this was high quality stuff from a ripe, flavorful melon.

This was a fine, chance encounter for a quick lunch on the path of my errands. What else do folks recommend here?
