I don't have enough praise to heap on the student-run 'Ciao! A Bakery' and 'Olewine's Meat & Cheese House' that Harrisburg Area Community College set up as part of it's Bricco restaurant and teaching complex in downtown Harrisburg on Chestnut Street.
I'm astounded by the freshness and taste of the bakery items, in particular their fresh fruit tarts, tangy lemon bars, and gorgeous cupcakes. Amazingly, the cupcakes weren't covered in heavy buttercream but instead with old-fashioned sugar frosting flowers, which was refreshing in my opinion. I also sampled a loaf of their French bread last week and it was very good as well, and this was the first time I had a chance to try the bread. It's been sold out every time I've gone.
The butcher shop has a very good selection of artisan cheeses from Pennsylvania and beyond, including Keswick Creamery cheeses, and their house-made pancetta and mozzarella are both worth writing home about. The service in the butcher shop is particularly good, too. Here's hoping they're a part of the neighborhood for good.
