Many people are not aware that there's a Target in Alameda, since it's tucked away behind the Webster tube. While it's been open for a couple of years now, until recently there was nothing else in that area. However, the rest of the shopping center is finally taking shape, anchored by a huge Safeway that opened last month.
So far the food offerings are a Panda Express and The Habit [Hamburger] (why any business in the internet age would give itself a name that's not easily googleable is a mystery to me: Hamburger Habit (the chain's original name) is infinitely better than "The Habit"!).
Anyway, I dropped in there last night to check it out. It was quite busy but the staff was very friendly and in good spirits. I ordered the double cheeseburger, which at $4.50 is a much better value than the similar Five Guys burger. I decided to blow my calorie budget on a chocolate malt (very good) instead of the fries, which looked unexceptional. If I could have the Habit burger with Five Guys fries I would be happier. Otherwise, not much to say. It's a pretty typical two-thin-patty style burger. I read comments that they are dry, but I didn't find that to be the case (perhaps comparing it again to a Five Guys burger with the plethora of available toppings that can result in a soggy mess if not chosen judiciously). There was too much lettuce for my taste, and I thought it needed salt (I also prefer ketchup on my burgers and I didn't see any and I didn't ask). There was a condiment station with pickled jalapenos, pepperoncini, etc.
It was fine but not crave-worthy. I might go back for a malt, and I might try the onion rings, which looked good.
