I recently received a few suggestions for a festive, inexpensive, place for a birthday dinner for 6. Ended up at Gyu-kaku, and it was perfect for the occassion. It's a fun place because you grill your own food, in a grill right in the middle of the table. In addition to being a festive experience, the food was actually very good. For me, highlights were the harami (skirt steak) in miso sauce, the kobe ribeye w/ ponzu sauce, and the unagi bibimba (fried rice with eel--we tried the original bibimba as well, and the one w/ unagi was better). All the marinades we tried were really flavorful. The price was right --$25 per person, including tip, and we ordered a LOT of food (no alcohol, though). The service was very good--they frequently replaced the grill cover so that new food didn't stick to the grill or get doused with old marinade, and our waiter was very patient about us ordering our food gradually, despite the fact that it was a busy night (we did this because we were waiting for 2 people who were stuck in traffic). The portions are small--expect to order at least 2 plates per person. It was fun to go with a group, get many different things, and share everything. I would definitely recommend.
