Gurkhas - Nepali in Boulder

mdg | Jan 27, 201505:32 PM     1

In my earlier Longmont post, ekt_now recommended Gurkhas in Gunbarrel on the north side of Boulder (http://www.gurkhasrestaurant.com). That's where I went on my overnight visit to Boulder and was richly rewarded. We have a lot of Indian restaurants, especially Andhra Pradesh. The "Nepali" restaurants in our area maybe have one or two Nepali dishes with the rest as standard north Indian.

So it was great to go to Gurkhas and see a half-dozen Nepali specialties, only one of which (the momos) that I've had before. I ordered the chicken chow chow and it was great - a wonderful stir fry of noodles, chicken, and vegetables with a whole different and delicious spicing than I've had before. When asked the spicing, I asked for whatever was done in Nepal, which was their medium. That was perfect for me, nicely spicy but not overwhelming. It went great with their Gurkhas beer. This was a really nice malty beer which I believe is brewed locally based on a Nepali recipe that the restaurant provides.

It was a slow night and the owner/chef was also doing wait staff service covering for an absent employee. When he saw my interest in his food he comped both an appetizer and dessert. The samosa chat was just like it sounds: small vegetable samosas cut up and treated in chat style with tamarind, mint chutney, and yogurt. It was delicious and a great change of pace. The dessert was a small custard dish, sort of an Nepali take on flan; I forget the name and don't see it on their online menu. I'm not a huge fan of Indian desserts but this one was good.

I sure hope they are busier with their lunch buffet than they were at Monday dinner. This is really good food that deserves more support!
