As a dim sum fanatic it was with great pleasure that I went to Gum Fung (or is it Gum Fong? the old KB Garden) yesterday and had some of the best dim sum I have had since the old 20 Mott St closed down several years ago. The crispy fried whole shrimp were the sweetest and tastiest, heads, tails, shells 'n all. The seafood dumpling soup was great. Those two dishes were the best of their kind I can remember having.
I didn't try too many of the dumplings but the ones I did were pretty darn good. They also had a line of cooks waiting to prepare some specialties to order such as assorted greens and stuffed eggplant or stuffed hot peppers.
The service was top notch. They constantly refilled our tea and water glassses and every cart stopped by our table to offer their items, no chasing down harried cart ladies. Also every cart had very hot items, none of those problems with cold food when seated far from the kitchen, which we were. We didn't feel rushed, and enjoyed a long meal. I think that Gum Fung may be the best dim sum in NYC at this time.
Does anyone know if has the same owners as Jing Fong? Their toothpicks had that restaurants name printed on them.
