Had a business meeting in Berkeley on Friday that needed wireless
and lunch. Recent review of the Guerilla Cafe on Shattuck looked
promising, both the review and their website said "free wireless".
Went. No wireless. Asked the nice lady (Andrea, if I read the captions
on their website photos correctly). She said "I don't know why people
keep coming in here and asking about that!". Maybe she should check
her own website :-). Then she suggested heading down the block to
Fertile Grounds ("He's the king of wireless!" she said).
That was thoughtful, directing me to her competition. Before I left
I got an espresso. As the youngsters say nowadays, Oh. My. God.
This is Bluebottle coffee? Is it always this good? I've had a few cups
at the farmers market, and it's been tasty and all but this may have
been the best espresso I've ever had. Certainly the best in the last few
It was simultaneously all of those good words that get applied to coffee
and none of the bad. It was thick. But thick in a light way. It was creamy
without being foamy. It was rich without being bitter. It was, what's
that Folger's word, it was Robust! How an ounce of anything can be
robust I don't know but there it was.
I'm still pretty sad that Smokey Joe's is gone, but now just a tiny bit less.
