Guatemala Restuarant & Izalco, Ravenswood

zim | Aug 19, 200304:35 PM

So the other day we decided to check out the guatemalan place on wilson but when we got there it was shuttered, does anyone know if it's closed for good? (it seems as my decisions to go for guatemalan food, neatly coincide with a restaurant going out of business, I had the same experience with antojitos guatemaltecos a while back)

Still feeling the need for central american food, we ended up at Izalco on Lawrence where the pupusas were fine if unremarkable (The masa versions were much better to my tastes than the rice flour versions, which were a little tougher without the give of corn meal), both the loroco and "con todo" versions were a little bland, but decent eating with a little of the house salsa.

One thing, though was truly very good and will cause me to go back - empanadas de leche. I know Gwiv has said in the past that I have a tendency of finding good desserts at places you wouldn't think of, and this may be more evidence of that. The empanadas are listed in the appetizer section but would (and will fro me) make a very good dessert. they are fritters made of mashed plantains, fried till very dark and sweet, encasing milk custard, then rolled/sprinkled with sugar. One of the three in the order contained black bean instead of milk custard, but the milk ones were definitely the standout.

I think Izalco also has a weekday buffet, but we ordered a la carte
